Chimes Tour
Chapel of the Chimes Mausoleum Saturday, May 17, 2008 from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
A remarkable vision was fashioned at the beginning of the 20th century in Oakland at the end of Piedmont Avenue—the California Memorial Columbarium, now known as Chapel of the Chimes. Designed by the gifted Julia Morgan and later expanded under the creative vision of Frank Lloyd Wright protégé Aaron Green, Chapel of the Chimes has been serving families in need for over a century. Now a City of Oakland Distinguished Landmark, Chapel of the Chimes is a community treasure preserved from the past and entrusted hereafter to present and future generations. Beautiful gardens, alcoves, stairwells, fountains and chapels rising into vaulted ceilings and illuminated by natural light await you! Space is limited for these docent-guided tours. Reservations are highly recommended. Please phone to let us know if you can join us.

Jazz at the Chimes - Clairdee
Chimes Chapel Sunday, May 18, 2008 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
"I am a jazz inspired storyteller," Clairdee says.
"I choose songs that have some relevance to my life experiences and to human
vulnerabilities. I want the music I sing to stir emotions, to make a
connection, to be accessible."
With her lustrous voice and soulful delivery, she hearkens
back to a time when jazz, pop, and rhythm and blues often blended seamlessly
together. Combining scene-stealing charisma with heartfelt humility and a
sincere belief in the transformative power of music, Clairdee has honed a
repertoire of standards set to state of the art arrangements that are equally
smart and entertaining. The concert will be followed by an artist reception where concert-goers are invited to meet the artist and her band, enjoy refreshments and purchase CDs. Tickets $15 general/ $10 seniors & students available at the door only starting at 12:30 pm on the day of the show. Cash only. Kids under 12 are free. Plenty of free parking. Jazz at the Chimes - Pete Yellin Allstars
Chimes Chapel Sunday, June 15, 2008 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
A recent Bay Area transplant and seasoned jazz saxophonist, Pete Yellin performs with The Pete Yellin Allstars in a special Father's Day concert in honor of jazz saxophonist Hal Stein. Yellin was originally invited to play alongside tenor saxophonist Hal Stein, who has headlined the Father’s Day Jazz at the Chimes for the past two years. Jazz at the Chimes producer Mary D’Orazi thought the two would be a good team to play on this special holiday because they are “jazz dads,” having been contemporaries on the NY scene in their early careers and both ending up here in the Bay Area. Both were open to sharing the bill and they began to get together to work out tunes. Unfortunately, not long after Stein became quite ill and could no longer play.
This concert will pay tribute to Stein and will feature Yellin and Andrew Speight on alto saxophones, Lee Bloom on piano, John Wiitala on bass and Akira Tana on drums, plus some invited guests. The concert will be followed by an artist reception where concert-goers are invited to meet the artists and their bandmates, enjoy refreshments and purchase CDs.
Yellin has toured and recorded with many of the seminal names in jazz, among them Joe Henderson (a member of Henderson's sextet in the 60s and 70s), Tito Puente, Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton, Eddie Palmieri, Machito, Mario Bausa and Maynard Ferguson. He also leads his own groups, releasing three CDs in the last three years with another in the can that features Eddie Henderson, Peter Leitch, Harvie S, Carl Allen and special guest Chick Corea.
Tickets $15 general/ $10 seniors & students available at the door only starting at 12:30 pm on the day of the show. Cash only. Kids under 12 are free. Plenty of free parking.
